According to our government census in 2010, 33.6% of Singaporeans identify themselves as Buddhists. This makes Buddhism the largest religion in Singapore.
Prince Gautama, or the Buddha was a spiritual leader who founded Buddhism.
Unknown to many, Buddha is also regarded as a God or Prophet in other religions like Hinduism, Ahmadiyya Islam and the Bahá'í faith.
Some of the basic teachings of Buddha are -
1. The Four Noble Truths - that suffering is an ingrained part of existence; that the origin of suffering is craving for sensuality, acquisition of identity, and annihilation; that suffering can be ended; and that following the Noble Eightfold Path is the means to accomplish this.
2. That all things that come to be have an end
3. Teachings should not be accepted unless they are borne out by our experience and are praised by the wise.
I realise all religions are the same. No religion is superior to another.
This Vesak Day, let us be enlightened and ask ourselves :
What have we done as human beings to contribute to this world?
Are we spreading more love or more hate?
