Please don't act like you don't understand Mandarin

I really dislike Singaporean Chinese young people who act like they don't understand or can't speak Mandarin very well.

And especially those who say "Oh I don't listen to Mandarin songs. They suck and are so cheesy!"

I mean come on la, you are a Chinese, so what's wrong with embracing your race's language and culture? You are a Chinese and yet all you listen to are American or English songs?

And then there are those Singaporean young people who say "Oh sorry my Chinese is not very good."

But then their command of English ain't good at all too. I mean if your command of English is excellent, then probably your poor Mandarin can be excused.

But the case for many Singaporean young people nowadays is, they aren't good in Mandarin and aren't good in English. Sad isn't it?

I think i's beautiful if you can muster both Mandarin and English as a Singaporean young Chinese. You think not knowing how to speak Mandarin is cool? Wait till you hear what your foreign friends tell you about your English.

Don't act like you don't understand me when I speak Mandarin to you. Don't act like you don't know what the Chinese song is talking about.

You are a native Singaporean Chinese. Your mother tongue is Mandarin. Your grandparents, uncles, aunties and parents speak Mandarin. SO how is it possible you can' speak Mandarin?

Be courageous and embrace your own language. It is just shameful if you are a Chinese and you think it's "cool" not to muster your mother tongue.

The Chinese people have been around for more than 5000 years. We invented gunpowder and paper, compass, printing methods, noodles, Kungfu. Our civilisation predates the Hebrews even.

Besides Hongkong, Taiwan and China which are predominantly Chinese, overseas Chinese can be found everywhere from the Americas, Europe, Africa, to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Russia because the Chinese people are versatile and can easily adapt to different environments and thrive.

How amazing you are, if you are Chinese!
